Dr. Hak's Last College Football Blog of the Season
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well there you have it. The college football regular season is over.
Ohio State vs Florida for all the marbles
January 8th in Glendale, AZ
And you know what?
This is some bullshit.
I was all prepared to say hey! Florida deserves a shot at the Buckeyes. They did what they had to do and are 12-1, SEC Champions.
But then I read this artcile entitled "Michigan was Robbed"
And then I read Lloyd Carr's comments (or saw them on SportsCenter) and he made one really really good point...
If USC had beaten UCLA, and Florida had still beaten Arkansas...Would Michigan THEN have been ranked behind Florida?
SH*T NO!
Thus, the Wolverines were robbed. And there in lies the entire fallacy with the BCS. Here we have an example of voters manipulating the poll to get a certain matchup in the championship game as opposed to RANKING the teams. So until they institute at the very minimum - a plus one system - this won't go away.
In fact, Let's see how a plus one system would've worked this year
Jan 1 - Rose Bowl - #1 Ohio State v #5 USC
Jan 1 - Sugar Bowl - #2 Michigan v #3 Florida
Jan 1 - Fiesta Bowl - #10 Oklahoma v #4 LSU
Jan 2 - Orange Bowl - #14 Wake Forest v #6 Louisville
Jan 8th - BCS Title Game - Sugar Bowl Winner v Rose Bowl Winner
So anyway...I don't know what I'm here to say. I guess that's it. Congrats to the Gators...who DO deserve to play in the title game despite the shady way it came about. I wish they could schedule each other for next season. I dare Lloyd Carr to tell Urban Meyer on national TV that he'll take the Wolverines TO THE SWAMP to start next season if he's man enough to accept...
Dr. Hak's Live Blog of the End of the 2006 Season
30 seconds ago UCLA Linebacker #2 Eric McNeal tips John David Booty's pass and holds on to intercept it...
UCLA is up 13-9...
1:10 left on the clock
wow...
One time for Black coaches...Karl Dorrell you're the man.
This isn't over though...I'm going to keep editing this entry as the SEC game plays out. Florida jumped to a 17-0 lead but Arkansas answered to pull within 10 at the half...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Bruins punter just blasted the longest, best punt i've ever seen. USC got the ball with 4 seconds left, hail mary to the UCLA 40 was tipped and could've been trouble but ended up on the ground...Their QB needs some ProActive if he's going to take advantage of his newfound popularity.
Way to go to Coach Dorrell and his staff. First to his defensive co-ordinator, then to him and the offensive coaches for having the balls to put mobile QB Patrick Cowan in and sit Ben Olson
...and now the night caps...
old school flavor with Nebraska-Oklahoma...
hey wait...Rutgers is up 7-0 on West Virginia! I didn't even realize that game started in all this excitement.
7:03
The Big East title is still up for grabs. Seems like LSU has bought their way into a BCS game...i mean they are ranked #5 but selling 30,000 tickets for both the Rose and Orange bowls and then if they end up in the Sugar Bowl (should Florida go to the BCS title game) is very impressive. Bowl selection committees are always looking to sell tickets and get ratings. This is why Louisville could get screwed if Rutgers wins the Big East, and the Gator Bowl takes advantage of their ability to once every 4 years select a Big XII team and take Texas...Louisville could end up ranked #5 or 6 in the country with a loss to a one loss team.
see why I love college football so much?
FYI - I used to hate Oklahoma. I'm not sure what started it. But I don't anymore. They showed a lot of heart this season and I respect Bob Stoops. I have a good reason to hate Nebraska (97 split title bullshit), so maybe I just hate all Big XII schools. THAT I can explain. I grew up in ACC / Big East country cheering for a Big 10 school and went to school in SEC/ACC country. I lived in Pac-10 territory for a while and just recently came to Big XII territory. Doesn't explain the hate but u know...whatever...In fact let's not call it hate. Lets just say the Big XII is kinda invisible to me. Its like I don't know them (thanks JPB)
They just interviewed Urban Meyer on live TV and he said he didn't know UCLA won...The announcer (not the interviewer) called him out for lying immediately...then just mentioned the Georgia Dome DOES have a scoreboard for other games...hmm...
7:08
*Interception Arkansas* - Middle linebacker #30 was sitting right there and Leak didn't see him. Arkansas as the ball on the 33 but Darren McFadden has an injured ankle...so...who knows whats about to happen now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
7:10
Darren McFadden just threw a touchdown pass...this dude is like a mix between Reggie Bush and LaDanian Tomlinson. I really want him to win the Heisman. I'm upset its supposed to be a "lock" that Troy Smith will win
Florida 17-14 Arkansas
Hmm...seems like the Rutgers - West Virginia game might be the last one for coaches Rich Rodriguez (WVa) and Greg Schiano...they keep putting out reports that Rodriguez will take the job no one wants in Alabama, and speculation runs rampant that Schiano will go back to Miami (though he's a Jersey guy)
I think Miami will hire D-Coordinator Randy Shannon
I think Alabama will hire Bo Pelini or Jimbo Fisher...if they want the job. Might go after Steve Kragthorpe at Tulsa since all the big names keep turning them down.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
Rutgers field goal up 10-3
Oh WOW - West Virginia multi-talented sophomore QB Pat White is hurt. That will take some of the multi-dimension like option attack away from the Mountaineers. They also said RB Steve Slaton has a wrist injury that will require surgery after the season but he's still playing. I can't imagine thats not painful...
Back to the SEC title game
Casey Dick just threw deep to the left side to D. Williams...he fucking DROPPED IT...it mightve been just passed his reach but he had a shot...he wears the #1 jersey... u can't wear the number 1 jersey and do that
Florida just ran into the punter HARD and no flag...I guess I'm cheering for Arkansas now because when Williams missed that pass i screamed YOU SUCK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh Shit!
#97 the Defensive lineman for Arkansas just intercepts a SHOVEL PASS!!! and runs it back 40 yards...
21-17 Arkansas
the announcer blamed it on the inexperience of Chris Leak running the spread option. Weird term to use for a 4 year starter at QB but i think that speaks to Urban Meyer not being willing to make his offense work within Leaks abilities...but Leak has shown some growth with his feet that I think will allow him to be the next Hines Ward (SEC QB at Georgia, smart able WR in the NFL)
I wonder if Meyer is arrogant/careless/crazy/pissed off enough to put Tim Tebow in at QB now
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~``
7:44
What the fuck?
First, Urban Meyer does something really stupid and wastes his last time out with 4:00 left in the 3rd before a 4th and 1. Then he punts anyway. And arkansas's return man calls the fair catch, DROPS IT on the 4 and the gators recover in the end zone for a TD!
Florida 24-21 Arkansas
That was some bullshit...
But so was that shovel pass INT...
Sloppy game...I wonder what the voter are thinking...because right now...RIGHT NOW the BCS Title game Pony Show is ON
Florida has a chance to impress enough voters to move them past Michigan in the polls. The Computers will be close. Not sure how close but close. So it comes down to the Coaches and the Harris poll voters
I bet some SEC coaches are going to fuck around and put Louisville ahead of Michigan on their ballots.
I doubt the Big 10 coaches would put Florida low, like at #7 or some shit, but thats the type of mess they do down south.
~~~~~~~~
7:55
FUCK
Percy Harvin just took a counter give 70 some yards for a TD run...he's the man...top WR recruit last year for a reason..he should wear the #1 jersey. I like him. respect skills. Like I like McFadden but his ankle is hurt. Felix Jones just tried to show a break away return TD but he didn't get far.
Florida 31-21 Arkansas 14:10 left in the 4th
Can they PLEASE put Mustain in the game...PLEASE...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
8:06
Or you could do that...
*Touchdown* Arkansas
double pass!
31-28 Florida up
~~~~~~~~~~~~
8:26
*Touchdown Florida*
Florida 38-28
OK, here I go telling everyone to vote this guy for Heisman, and Darren McFadden throws his first bad pass of the season. He's not 6-7 with an INT = *INT Florida*
7:25 left
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~```
8:38
Another interception by Florida
The game is over
Florida 38-28
I don't even care what happens with Louisville anymore
*sigh*
As much as I'd love Michigan to get a rematch, Florida deserves a shot to win a National Championship against Ohio State...now if the voters DON'T move Florida ahead of Michigan...I won't really be that mad. I mean fuck Florida. That was a luck win against South Carolina. Yeah Brandi I said it...I used to like the gators but I don't like Urban Meyer. Still, congrats and good luck.
So It looks like the Bowls are going to shake out this way
~~~~~~~~
11:06 ESPN just showed a fan poll showing fans outside of the SEC states support a re-match. Wow. Wasn't expecting that. All the announcers have been trying to get a Ohio State - Florida matchup...thus, I have to leave the following two scenarios
I found myself cheering for Rutgers at the end of that game but it at least keeps Louisville from being #6 and playing in the Sun Bowl on Dec 28th or something crazy like that...
Rose Bowl - USC v Michigan
Sugar Bowl - LSU v Notre Dame
Orange Bowl - Wake Forest v Louisville
Fiesta - Oklahoma v Boise State
National Championship - Ohio State v Florida
*****Version B*****
Rose - USC v LSU
Sugar - Florida v Notre Dame
Orange - Wake Forest v Louisville
Fiesta - Oklahoma v Boise State
BCS Title Game - Ohio State v Michigan
Place Your Bets Here + College Football Rankings
Looks like USC will pull it out...wait...there's a RIVALRY game left to be played...and we all know what Rivalry games do to people...don't we?
Let me just say this...I was playing NCAA Football 07 the other day and there were 4 undefeated teams going into the last week of the season.
3 of them were in conference championship games and ALL OF THEM LOST...now this is a simulated video game, but its possible...and I bring that up because if USC loses... that'll be 2 out of the 3 teams that had to lose for Michigan to get a rematch...Arkansas lost to LSU and now Florida will lose to Arkansas...so U-C-L-A...make it happen
Dr. Hak's Rankings - 2nd to Last Week
#1 Ohio State
#2 Michigan
#3 USC - hey, Michigan beat Notre Dame worse AT South Bend...who'd win a Michigan - USC game...UM 35-20...but hey, I can't be mad, they did lose a game. U want to make the title game, u have to go undefeated...thats the only way to guarantee that you...hey huh? what? Oh, sorry I forgot about Auburn...we need a 4 team playoff. Or a Plus One format to the BCS bowls
#4 Florida - for this week
#5 Rutgers
#6 Louisville
#7 LSU
#8 Boise State - deserves their opportunity
#9 Wisconsin
#10-tie Oklahoma
#10-tie Arkanasas
Dr. Hak's College Football PICKS - Championship Week
For those of you that don't know, that used to be the supreme rivalry of the Southwest...or so some Sports Illustrated ad that I remember from like 10 years ago would have you believe.
Big XII Championship
Nebraska 17 - 23 Oklahoma
SEC Championship
Arkansas 20 - 21 Florida (I changed my mind)
College Football is My Girlfriend and She's Leaving Me in Two Weeks
I've had some time to think about my rankings and I've made some decisions.
We are now at the point in the season where you can take what a team did for an entire year into consideration.
We are not at the point in the season where you can rank a team ahead of another team that beat them even if they have the same number of losses.
We are now at the time of the season where no one knows what's going to happen in the "race for #2" but there will damn sure be some upsets.
OK...Let's go
Dr. Hak's T-minus-2 weeks Rankings
#1 Ohio State - and deservedly so
#2 Michigan - Henne, Hart, and Co. might get another shot in 2008 season if not a re-match this year. Ohio State lost their entire defense and came back to the BCS title game, I'm sure the Wolverines could too.
#3 USC - I will move them up if they thrash Notre Dame worse than Michigan did
#4 Arkansas
#5 West Virginia - in the debate about who would give Ohio State the best game...I'd LOVE to see Ohio State and West Virginia hang 60 on each other. It'd be a battle of fitness more than anything else
#6 Florida
#7 Louisville
#8 Rutgers - not sure why they dropped to 15 in the "expert" polls...actually I am sure but I don't agree with it unless they lose again.
#9 Wisconsin - would've been nice to see them play Ohio State
#10 Notre Dame - I don't f*** with the Fighting Irish. You'll see why on Saturday - as if Michigan 47 - 21 @ home wasn't enough.
#11 Boise State
#12 Texas
#13 LSU
#14 Oklahoma
#15 Auburn
#16 Hawaii
#17 Georgia Tech
#18 Boston College
#19 Virginia Tech
#20 Wake Forest
#21 FAMU
Ain't Gonna Be No Rematch, Says Apollo Creed
Hopefully there will be a rematch. I'm watching USC-Cal...its 3-2 in the 2nd quarter. I'm not impressed.
USC isn't the #2 team in the nation
I've been watching Florida all season...the Gators are not the #2 team in the nation
I'd love to say its Rutgers. I like Ray Rice, I like their defense. But they are losing 17-3 at the half to Cincinnati
West Virginia isn't better than Michigan
Notre Dame lost at home to Michigan by 4 touchdowns and it could've been 8.
Arkansas lost to USC. It was the first week of the season but they did lose that game and it was like 50-14.
So can I rank Michigan #2? Does it even matter?
I wonder what the AP will do. They are probably not all going to see this USC game. Its possible USC will lose...as I type this...Cal just made it 9-6.
I wonder what the coaches and computers will do.
I agree with the broadcasters at the end of the game. Michigan and Ohio State are the best two teams in the country. The Wolverines outplayed the Buckeyes but gave up those random long runs and that penalty at the end...that hurt. I'm depressed (had a bad beat in a poker tournament where first place was a 42 inch plasma. my aces got cracked. i would've been chip leader)
So...we'll have to see. I'll have rankings up after the weekend is done
Hail! to the Victors
or whatever
Michigan 34 - 24 Ohio State and My Family History
My father and mother met while attending grad school in Ann Arbor many years ago, and in my very first months of life while my mommy finished her PhD in comparative literature, I sat quietly with her in the library as onlookers marveled at how well-behaved a young man I was.
They still marvel, but now its because I'm Dr. Hak and I've got the medicine.
Regardless, my grandaunt Thelma Budd Jones passed away a few months ago. She was as close to me as my grandmother (her sister, my dad's mother) if not more and her insights are still missed to this day. I'm flashing back right now to the fly pictures of her and her sisters as young beautiful AKAs back in the day...
OK, so when I went to Detroit for the service, I took the opportunity to ask my dad if we could go to Ann Arbor. Its only 25 miles from DTW airport, and you know, since I live in Houston, TX, that's down the street. My dad thought it was far, so I drove.
I got to see the Big House, which is tucked inside of a hill kinda sorta, and his old apartment, which was maybe 2 blocks away - close enough that they can charge $10 for parking if they want on game day.
Well then I asked him to show me where he and my mother met, and you know what he tells me? "Oh we met in Detroit at TV station 50 while working on a show".
I was like WHAT!? All this time I thought it went down differently.
Its all good though. I got to see some of the other important landmarks on campus and the buildings they used to take class in.
If I get a PhD of my own (Dr. Hak for REAL up in this piece), i had decided a while back that I'd go to Michigan to get it. This is probably still true.
So there you have it. The only school I care half as much about as FAMU is the University of Michigan.
So you might ask, how does that affect my view on this Saturday's Game of the Century?
Well what do you think?
When I was little my dad used to sing
Hail! to the victors valiantHail! to the conqu'ring heroesHail! Hail! to Michigan,the champions of the West!
...ALL THE TIME
My mother's cousin is Ed Shuttlesworth (see fullbacks), star fullback for Michigan in the early 70s. In fact, when my mother went to school there, all she had to do "was tell people I wad Ed Shuttlesworth's family and they were really really nice to me"
If I had been a big time college recruit, in football or basketball, I'dve gone to Michigan. In 1998 I don't think another school would've had a chance...except one with a black coach and there was only one...Ty Willingham at U-Washington...umm no.
So there you have it. I'm a Rattler till I die, I bleed Orange and Green, but I love Maize and Blue so what ya gonna do
------------------
The Big Game - A Prediction & Simulation
3-7
19 yard field goal by Ohio State after a goal line stand by Michigan's red zone defense
17-10
Arrington catches a 46 yard pass in one on one coverage after a Gonzalez fumble across the middle, recoverd by Woodley.
24-10
Rivas 37 yd field goal
27-10
~~~~~~~~~~~
As i'm writing this, legendary Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler passed away at age 77. May God bless his family and us all .
I have no idea how this affects the mood of the players and coaches - especially Lloyd Carr, his mentee and current Wolverines coach...
I am saddened that he didn't get to see this game, the game of the century, one that would not be nearly as big of a deal if not for his influence during his war with Buckeyes former coach Woody Hayes.
~~~~~~~~
4th Quarter - The Buckeyes strike back
Troy Smith 14 yd TD run
27 - 17
Gonzalez 8 yd TD catch from Smith
27 - 24
Ohio State goes for it on 4th down with 6 minutes to play...Troy Smith tries to do too much and gets stopped behind the line of scrimmage. Michigan takes over and seals the game with a
Mike Hart 3 yd TD run
Final Score
Michigan 34 - 24 Ohio State
F*** Fantasy Football
Its the end of july. which means august is here. Which means september is a quick month away (like july was), which means football season is coming!!!!
Which means that this is the time of year when my friends start asking about "The League"
I have one thing to say about "The League"
Fuck Fantasy Football
Yeah that's right. I said it.
Fantasy football is the most addictive frustrating shit possible.
For the two of you reading this who don't know what I'm talking about, fantasy football is a statistical game, whereas you and some people get together and hold a "draft" of as many NFL players as you want. As their stats grow, so do your points. Your QB throws a TD, you get points. Your RB coughs up a fumble, you lose some - you get the gist.
Anyway, what this leads to, often, is the emotional equivalent of having 10 favorite football teams.
Yes, you already know my favorite team is the Washington Redskins. Nothing will change that - ever. With the possible exception of my purchase of an NFL franchise or my son making the roster of one that isn't the 'Skins, but whatever.
This is what fantasy football does to you. First of all you either get DirecTV NFL Sunday ticket so you can follow ALL your players or you go to a bar and breath smoke and randomly cheer for odd things.
Such as "Throw it to T.O. you bastard!!!" or "F***! They're going to get a field goal on my defense!"
Little dumb shit like that. I have some friends I go with and without naming names - Damien - some of them get a little too animated about the fantasy shit.
Now to be fair, I've already accomplished everything I want to accomplish in Fantasy football. I crush the competition with a regular pattern of execution and luck. So last summer I really didn't even want to start "The League" - a fantasy football competition that I am the commissioner of.
The League is officially known as the Simply The Best Invitational. My team name used to be Simply The Best, but since last year, it became FUCK FANTASY FOOTBALL
I might be making myself sound bitter, but last year I didn't do diddly squat when it comes to winning. I gave up in like Week 4. Perhaps if I was still hungry for victory I would've cared, but like the streets - they just keep pulling me back in.
Sure, I enjoy the chance to communicate with my friends on a regular basis for 5 months at a time, but I just...I dont know, I feel like that old retired vet who doesn't want fans asking him why he retired so early - like Barry Sanders. I'm trying to walk away while I can still stand but y'all want me to break the all time rushing record? How about YOU go break the all time rushing record when LaVar Arrington's big ass is breathing down your neck, then tell me what to do with myself.
I digress
Last year I got screwed from jump. Daunte Culpepper was hurt. Those lames in the Minnesota Vikings organization didn't say shit. Then after I drafted him with my 1st roundpick, suddenly he has three fucked up knee ligaments. I'm not going to bore you with the logistics of what happens when you're first round pick doesnt ever play, but lets just say its not good...At all...like he was getting me negative points.
Now, a year later, I have some perspective. I shouldn't have drafted his bitch ass. Not because you aren't supposed to draft QBs before all the decent RBs are gone (a kink in the fantasy scoring system for you first timers. Yes Tiki Barber is more important than Peyton Manning) but because Randy Moss had left.
Who did I think he'd be throwing to? The Air Up There?
That was a bad pick that I made based on his 2004 performance (as good or better than most RBs in fantasy points) but you must take into consideration a lot of factors when you make a pick.
This year, watch Larry Johnson, LaDanian Tomlinson, and Shaun Alexander. Now far and away, these are the top 3 picks in fantasy football this year. You really cannot justify having one of the first 3 picks and not taking one of them. THAT BEING SAID, each had significant changes that might affect their play
Larry Johnson would've set the alltime rushing yards and td record had he started all season. He took Coach Dick Vermeil's advice and "took off the diapers". Well this year he doesn't have the benefit of sharing carries with Priest Holmes, AND Willie Roaf retired. Willie Roaf is one of the best blocking linemen in history. Oh yeah, and the Chiefs lost Offensive coordinator Al Saunders, an X's and O's genius who was able to cover up the fact that they had the shittiest receiving corp EVER. So now that he has less blocking and the passing game will be downgraded, guess what - defenses will be waiting for him
LaDanian Tomlinson - one of my favorite players on my 2nd favorite team (based on my time in San Diego and the fact that they don't play in the NFC) will probably see some level of drop off at the beginning of the season. Pro Bowl QB Drew Brees was let go and he signed with the Saints. 3rd year player Phillip Rivers will take his place after not having any playing time his first 2 years in the league. Rivers, to me, is the best of the 3 QBs taken in the top 11 two years ago. He's better than Eli Manning, and he's better than Ben Rothlisberger. So at some point the SD passing game will be ok. Maybe by Week 7. But what about before that?
Shaun Alexander - the Seahawks let Steve Hutchinson go...one of the best lineman in the game, and I think they let his fullback go too.
Anyway - see how I went from saying fuck fantasy football to going on and on about it for like 20 mintues - DAMMIT
My league drafts August 26. I think we'll have 10 players this year, and our first lady entrant
On to real life - did I tell you the REDSKINS play in Texas two consecutive weekends? That's great. @Houston one week @Dallas the next. I'm saving money already. I need to buy a jersey to wear to the games.
