My Annual Letter to Daniel Snyder

Dear Daniel Snyder,

This is the 2nd year that I am writing you a letter to address issues I consider important to my favorite NFL team - which you happen to own - The Washington Redskins. The last time was when the choice of who was going to succeed Joe Gibbs came up and the whole Jim Fassel debacle popped off. I was one of the fans unhappy about that "hire".

I am also unhappy about the way you didn't provide Jim Zorn with the support he needed in the way of an experienced offensive staff - - - but how could you have, when the "GM" in the building didn't know what the hell he was doing either?

THANK YOU for letting Vinny Cerrato go. I can't begin to tell you how 99.9% of Redskins fans rejoiced at that news.

STOP hiring GMs and coaches without embracing the Rooney Rule. Perhaps you really did "interview" Jerry Gray this year and Jim Caldwell last year, but the perception is that you are one of the full-of-shit owners who interviews minority candidates just because you have to. Not because you are racist, but because you "already know" who you want to hire and go do what you want. Yet somehow, we ended up with Jim Zorn as our coach last year? Be for real. I like Zorn, but everyone knew he wasn't ready to be a HC before being an OC. Why would you even put him in that position? Sheesh.

WHY won't you change the name of the team? Tradition isn't an excuse for bullshit or racism. And frankly, the word Redskins is both. Come on son. I know u didn't come up with it but at least do something to move the franchise forward. Pick a good new name and the people will love you.

FANTASY football isn't what you are supposed to be doing here. Haynesworth seemed like a good idea last offseason, so I'm not going to bring up old signings for spite. But we do need you not to go around only considering big name coaches for the job. Mike Shannahan and Bill Cowher do have Super Bowl rings, yes, and so did Joe Gibbs when you lured him back. But Norv Turner and Marvin Lewis were on your staffs and got away. Gregg Williams too. It's not always about flash. This isn't Dallas. DC fans actually know and understand the game of football. Older coaches are set in their ways. Find us someone young, hungry and READY to make it happen... Someone who's ran at least half of a team before would be great.

JIM Zorn... you owe him an apology. His temperament is PERFECT for that of an NFL head coach. But you cut the legs out from under him by REFUSING TO ADDRESS THE REAL ISSUES THE TEAM HAS - The offensive line. Bringing back Derrick Dockery plugged one of 3, perhaps 4 holes along the offensive line we knew of at the end of the 2008 season. Randy Thomas gets hurt all the time but you didn't replace him. Stephon Heyer isn't ready to be a full time starting OT, but you didn't replace him. We didn't see Chris Samuels' spinal thing coming but there's a "depth" thing you're supposed to have along the o-line and its crazy how this year we're signing random fatties off the street and castoffs from other teams to be able to field a team. GTFO of here with that.

THE DRAFT this coming April is very very very important. DO NOT FUCK IT UP BY DRAFTING A QUARTERBACK IN THE FIRST ROUND.

I understand Jimmy Clausen may be good and Sam Bradford has hype (he won't be shit in the in NFL, trust) but the Skins have Jason Campbell. Now, I'm not a JC fan, but in the 3rd quarter of this season, the random patchwork offensive line was able to keep him clean and guess what... he played like a starting NFL quarterback. But through 14 games he had been sacked 38 times? Get this man some friggin protection and don't start wasting our next two seasons with some young punk who may or may not pan out. Don't we have Colt Brennan too? See what he can do. My position on this is bouyed by the fact that if we make it through the 2010 season, QBs will be available. Kolb and Vick from Philly will both be free agents for example. And Jake Locker will enter the draft (better than Bradford) if you insist on starting over.

The only acceptable position for the Skins to draft in 2010's first round is OFFENSIVE TACKLE. Samuels may retire.

That means the acceptable position for us to draft in the 2nd round is ALSO OFFENSIVE LINE.

3rd round pick is gone from getting Jarmon in the supplemental draft. GOOD pick. He got hurt but he's going to be great with Orakpo on the other end and Haynesworth in between. I'm very excited about this next season. It took a long ass time but in one offseason, the D-Line went from liability to potential strength... USE THAT LESSON AND FIX THE OFFENSIVE LINE BEFORE I HAVE TO GO OFF. Thanks.

4th round - running back. Someone productive in college. Doesn't matter what school he went to.

5th round - linebacker depth.

GM - Thank you for hiring a real GM to run the team. Please let him run the team.

That's enough for now. I'd like to say that I'm so happy with Cerrato being gone, this letter took a totally different tone than if he was still around. Big changes have to be mad, especially in your own behavior, but at least we can see you aren't blind.

Finally - give JC a fair two year contract, let your ineffective friend Clinton Portis ride off into the sunset, and gives us a product on the field that will make me regret passing up those season tickets I put down a deposit for this year.

-Hail to the Redskins,
Dr Hak

FAMU's Path to the 2009 FCS Playoffs

After a far-too-close and way-too-tense OT victory against 2008 Homecoming spoiler Morgan State in Balitimore, FAMU returned to the FCS Football Rankings today at #23 (Coaches) and #24 (Media)

Media Rankings

I've done my own analysis of the Rattlers' chances of making the playoffs - provided we win our last 3 games against NC A&T, Hampton and BCC.

I'd say we have a 40% chance of making it in under the current rules (8 automatic qualifiers and 8 at-large bids) and need 4 - but preferably 5 specific teams out of this group...

Weber State
Eastern Washington
Delaware
McNeese State
Stephen F Austin
Northern Iowa
Holy Cross
Colgate
Lafayette

...to lose during the last 3 weeks of the season. Next year the field expands to 20 (why not 24 or 32??) teams with 10-conference champions automatically making it and 10 at-large bids. Under those rules we'd be much much closer to "IN".

Of the 8 at-large bids, 3 will likely go to CAA teams Villanova, New Hampshire and William & Mary, along with defending champion Richmond.

The Missouri Valley Conference will probably grab 2 at-large bids for Northern Iowa (probably) and the loser of the South Dakota State vs Southern Illinois game, which will decide their conference champion.

Elon and Appalachian State will play for the Southern Conference title soon, and the loser will also grab an at-large bid.

That's 6 at-large spots given out, and two left. A small possibility exists that New Hampshire and Northern Iowa will play themselves "out" with two losses.

With two spots left, FAMU needs "help". With 3 weeks left in the season, there is enough time for the necessary teams to lose and get out of the way, but also opportunities for the same teams to play their way to "lock" status.

Of the two remaining spots, the following teams from the following conference are in play

Big Sky
(Montana is ranked #2 and won the conference)

#19 Weber State - may not reach the minimum of 7 wins with two difficult home games to finish the schedule. If they do, the committee will consider that two of their losses came to FBS teams.

#21 Eastern Washington - recently won appeal of NCAA playoff ban.

Colonial
(The CAA has 4 of the top 8 teams. Richmond, Villanova, Wiliam & Mary, and New Hampshire all beat 1-A/FBS teams this year and none have more than 1 loss with 3 games left. Barring a collapse by W&M or NH, all 4 are in.)

#23 Delaware - will not have enough Division 1 victories to qualify unless they beat Navy and #4 Villanova, both on the road. The committee DID let 5 CAA teams in the field last year (when they should've put in Liberty over Maine).

Patriot League
(#13 Holy Cross is the conference front-runner)

#18 Colgate
#25 Lafayette - a victory over Colgate this weekend would set up a dramatic PL championship game with #13 Holy Cross on Nov 14th. Under that scenario, it is likely only the winner would make the playoffs. Should Colgate and Holy Cross both defeat Lafayette, however, both may be in.

Southland Conference

#12 McNeese State

#15 Stephen F Austin
A wild 4 or 5 way race for the title will continue through the end of the season. Depending on how it goes, one or both of these Southland teams could seek an at-large berth.

MEAC (1 team)

#24 FAMU - a 9-2 record with losses to #10 South Carolina State and "The U". Lack of schedule strength may be too much to overcome. Black schools are rarely given that much respect in FCS at-large discussion unless they are ranked in the top 10. FAMU will likely finish the season ranked between 16 and 20, with 2 or 3 teams ahead of them that aren't playoff eligible

FAMU's "best friend" - the University of Northern Arizona. A good team capable of beating Weber State on the road and Eastern Washington at home to end the season, eliminating two potential roadblocks.

Here's a short article about FAMU's revitalized football program under Coach Joe Taylor.

OK, all that being said, here's my PERCEPTION of the pecking order for the teams seeking an at-large bid under the extremely random and unlikely scenario that they all win out. Now, before you say "why should I care about your perception", you should know that I looked last week's FCS rankings, and was, within an hour, able to predict this week's rankings with 95% accuracy. I'd claim 100 percent, since I had the correct 25 teams, but #23, 24, and 25 were in a different order than the media voted...

Pecking Order Should They All Win Out

1*. #12 McNeese State - could narrowly edge out Delaware in the everyone-wins-out scenario given the general respect the Southland Conference gets and their road win at #7 Appalachain State. COULD get in with a loss @ Texas State anyway if App State beats Elon and rises to the Top 5 by season's end.

*2. #19 Weber State - has "quality losses" (moral victories?) and the last two games on the schedule would boost their stock. However, their record would be 7-4.

3. #23 Delaware - I mentioned they gave the CAA five spots last year right? Well if Delaware beats 1-A Navy and #4 Villanova it could definitely happen again. Last year's Maine/CAA 5th team over Liberty deal was partially enabled by the fact that Liberty doesn't come from a highly regarded conference, but McNeese St, Stephen F Austin, Eastern Washington and Weber State do.

4. #21 Eastern Washington - though I'm not sure how the selection committee feels about them being banned and then unbanned from the postseason. Winning at Northern Arizona to end the season would be impressive.

5a and 5b. Lafayette / Colgate - since they play, they both can't win out. I mentioned earlier the scenario in which both could lose. Otherwise, two teams from the Patroit League will have a good case for the playoffs.

6. Florida A&M - sadly, we need 4 or 5 teams to lose to get us to "IN" status. Luckily, this is college football and those things tend to happen. It would be a GREAT time for FAMU to start beating the snot out of MEAC also-rans and for LeRoy Vann to get back on ESPN with a record-breaking punt return TD.

7. Northern Arizona - a bad, bad loss to Sacramento State probably ended their hopes but beating Weber AND Eastern Washington along with their narrow OT loss to #2 Montana could help. Probably not enough to push them past a 9-2 FAMU or 10-1 Lafayette though.

8. Texas State - has a chance to win their conference, with quality opponents left to go. May be too late for an at-large bid though.

Final Notes

The possibility that Northern Iowa, currently #12, falls out of their "IN" spot does exist. They have a road game against conference opponent Illinois State to end the season. They are highly ranked based on their 16-17 loss at Iowa (#4 in the BCS rankings and leading the Big Ten as of now) and previous reputation but have no particular quality wins this season.

Summary - FAMU needs 5 teams to lose to be sure of entry to the playoffs. That being said, FAMU has a playoff history which leads to respect from the committee, as well as star players in LeRoy Vann and Curtis Pulley, which definitely helps as well.

We'll find out in 3 weeks!

College Football 2009 "Pre"View

Dr Hak is Back, and my favorite sport - COLLEGE Football - is back as well.

Sadly, or perhaps fortunately, I didn't get around to putting together a true pre-season list of predictions before last weekend, so we're you're going to have to take my word for some of the things I'm about to say.

Such as... Oklahoma is overrated.

That's really the only part of what WOULD have been the preview that I feel the need to put out there. Oklahoma was ranked #3 in the Coaches poll, because Sam Bradford came back. Well... 4 of his offensive linemen didn't, and where I'm sitting, that's a big...BIG problem. Texas will probably destroy them this year to make SURE they don't have to deal with any weirdo tiebreakers, and Bradford owes Colt McCoy that Heisman Trophy (real talk, McCoy was robbed in '08).
Also, the more I watch footage of Mike Gundy go slam OFF on a reporter in defense of one of his Oklahoma State Cowboys, the more I am convinced that his recruiting classes and motivational skills will be/ are top notch, and OK State plays them tough as it is.

All that to say... I didn't see it for Oklahoma. They didn't deserve to be ranked that high.

BYU vs Oklahoma - I will admit I did NOT see the Sooners losing to BYU at home, however. That was pretty crazy. As soon as Sam Bradford went out, that was a wrap. He just may, or may not have lost a bunch of money. For his sake, I hope he recovers 100%, as I don't have the impression that he's a bad kid - I mean, its not like he stole the Heisman literally, he doesn't get a vote - and the thought of going from #1 pick to bum shoulder and can't throw anymore is too much for one man to handle.

Also over-rated = LSU, Cal

Enough about that. Let's get on to some after-Week 1 predictions.

Division 1-A / FCS Champions
ACC
Georgia Tech

Big East
Cincinnati

Big Ten
Michigan

Big XII
Texas

PAC 10
USC

SEC
Ole Miss (yep)

WAC
Boise State

Mountain West
BYU or TCU (i want to see TCU play first)

Conference USA
Tulsa

Sun Belt
North Texas

MAC
Buffalo

BCS Bowl Games

National Championship
Texas vs Ole Miss

Rose Bowl
USC vs Michigan

Fiesta Bowl
Notre Dame vs BYU

Orange Bowl
Georgia Tech vs Cincinnati

Sugar Bowl
Florida vs Oklahoma State

Why am I picking Ole Miss over Florida?

Just a hunch. I see the Gators getting caught slipping in Atlanta by the same team that beat them at the Swamp last year.

I'm not going to sit here and act like Texas vs Florida for the BCS title isn't likely to happen, but usually, when two teams are as heavily favored to meet in the National Title game as the Gators and 'Horns...something happens.

Other teams I can see sneaking into the title game discussion include:

Oklahoma State
USC
BYU
Miami
Georgia Tech

Football is Back...

Bothered Sports Blogger

I'm not an "angry" person, no matter what you've heard. I'm just intense, and keep it real to the point where fake folks and those who live their lives pretending to feel one way but thinking another can't even recognize it. But this isn't about me, I just wanted to get that out there...

The following things must change in sports, because they are making me mad...

1. The Washington Redskins must change their name.

2. Daniel Snyder, please sell the Washington Redskins, or get someone competent and proven to run it and get the hell out of the way.

Who the fuck is Vinny Cerrato and why is he trusted to run the team? Give me ONE good reason

3. No more college football polls until after week 4.

Those who actually have to turn a ballot in can keep a piece of scrap paper for reference, but don't go around printing and influencing other's opinions for no good reason

4. Illegal Contact Downfield needs to be removed as an NFL penalty.

Its either pass interference or its NOT.

5. Fantasy football should be regulated like a drug.

6. Dana White, I appreciate the good MMA, but can you please stop waffling in press conferences? If you can't 100% ensure that the person you say is going to get a title shot 15 minutes after an impressive knockout will actually get it due to contracts or other issues, just wait and say something not so damn definitive. You were gonna reverse the Thales Leites firing. Dan Henderson was going to get the next crack at Anderson Silva. Rampage was going to die for standing you up to shoot the A-Team movie (jokes!), etc etc. I'm not THAT pressed that you really change because if you did you'd have to give us NFL-coach-speak, which is bland and uninformative, but you're getting people excited for no good reason (other than blog fodder) far too often.

7. Media speculation on people getting fired... BEFORE THE GAMES HAVE BEEN PLAYED/

There's some chicken-and-egg to speculating which coach is going to get fired. These people have families (and buyout clauses too...) and if someone went around writing BEFORE the season that a certain columnist was going to get fired in 4 weeks if they don't produce some excellent columns there'd be 28 days of crossfire. But NFL, NBA and pretty much any major sport's coaches don't have time to properly address the "haters".

My point is, speculating who is going to get fired once their team picks up some really bad losses is one thing. Pre-season "hot seat" talk is bullshit and an exercise in random speculation and futility.

That's all for now... I'm sure I'll add to the list later!
